PLAY BACK FORWARD 2025
PLAY BACK FORWARD
In collaboration with Annis Joslin
Oct. 2025 - Apr. 2026
Hove Museum
Hove, UK
Commissioned by videoclub, in partnership with Corridor projects, Brighton & Hove museums and the South East Screen Archive
Play Back Forward is a research-led exhibition developed through two years of engagement with early film and optical media held in the Brighton & Hove Museums collection and early film works by Brighton and Hove pioneers George Albert Smith, Laura Bayley Smith, and James Williamson from the South East Screen Archive.
The exhibition brings together archival materials and newly commissioned moving image works, prints, and interactive video pieces created collaboratively with artist Annis Joslin. These works draw on the visual languages, material processes, and trick effects of early cinema, translating them into contemporary, hands-on practices of making and shared inquiry.
Play Back Forward was developed as part of Days of Wonder, a three-year programme exploring film and media heritage in Brighton & Hove, curated and produced by Corridor and videoclub in partnership with Brighton & Hove Museums and Screen Archive South East.
